Slackware, launched in 1993 by Patrick Volkerding, is the oldest actively maintained Linux distribution. Born from Softlanding Linux System, it emphasized simplicity, stability, and user control, using .tgz packages and a BSD-style init system. Through the 1990s, it gained popularity for reliability, introducing CD-ROM support and 64-bit architecture by the 2000s. Slackware avoided systemd, sticking with SysVinit, and modernized with UEFI and updated kernels in the 2010s. The 2022 release, Slackware 15.0, supported modern hardware while preserving its minimalist philosophy. As of 2025, Slackware thrives, influencing derivatives and remaining a favorite for Linux purists and custom system builders.
